๐Project Overview
Project Overview
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) embarked on a major modernization project with the construction of the new Harvey Milk Terminal 1. As part of this critical infrastructure development, the airport sought to implement a next-generation baggage handling system that would set a new standard for efficiency and security.
The project's goal was to move away from traditional conveyor belt systems and introduce a more advanced, reliable, and secure method of transporting passenger luggage. SFO chose to partner with BEUMER Group to achieve this by installing the United States' first Individual Carrier System (ICS). This decision positioned Terminal 1 at the forefront of baggage handling technology in the country.
Technical Solution
Individual Carrier System (ICS)
The core of the solution is BEUMER Group's Individual Carrier System (ICS). This is a tote-based baggage handling system where each piece of luggage is placed into its own dedicated carrier (tote). These individual carriers are then transported on an overhead network of tracks, functioning similarly to an advanced monorail system for baggage.

Key Features
This project's most significant feature is its status as the pioneering installation of an Individual Carrier System in the United States, introducing this European-proven technology to the US airport market. The tote-based design fundamentally changes baggage handling from a bulk conveyor process to an individualized, secure transport method.
The system was integrated as a key component of the brand-new Harvey Milk Terminal 1, allowing it to be designed into the terminal's infrastructure from the ground up. Its primary design objectives are aligned with modern airport needs: maximizing operational efficiency for high passenger volume while significantly enhancing the physical security and integrity of passenger baggage.
Results & Benefits
The successful implementation established SFO's Harvey Milk Terminal 1 as a leader in airport innovation within the United States. The ICS system provides a tangible improvement in baggage handling efficiency, enabling faster and more reliable transport of luggage from check-in to aircraft and from aircraft to baggage claim.
The individual carrier approach directly enhances baggage security, giving passengers greater confidence. By being the first US adopter, SFO has set a benchmark for other airports considering advanced baggage handling solutions.
System Integrator
BEUMER Group served as the turnkey system integrator for this landmark project. Their role encompassed the complete lifecycle: designing the ICS solution tailored for Terminal 1, building the system components, and installing and commissioning the first-of-its-kind baggage handling system in the United States. Their expertise in advanced baggage handling technology was crucial in bringing this innovative system to SFO.
